Odd twists on social networks.

posted Wednesday, 3 December 2008
Okay, so I'm a sucker for trying out all these damned social networks that pop up like weeds.
It's not that I care to meet new people, or even really feel the need to exist in the digital realm. I really like to see what technology and innovations are being implemented.
Let me also at this point confess that I actually got a twitter account.
It think it's quite ridiculous... yet I was asked to gauge what it could do for marketing of a client, so I had to check it out.
I don't like to communicate enough to twitter. I don't frankly like people enough to twitter. And not that anyone actually reads this blog, but I am of course to be found at twitter.com/godghoti.
So on to what this post was actually about, a social site I DO like. Or at least think has a great set of tools.
Check out geni.com which is a genealogy social network. Now, I saw it through a news article about the Facebook Connect push, but checked it out.
You must understand my family's obsession with genealogy, this site is... close to a perfect resource, as all family members (hooked in through email and logon, per usual) can add to, correct, and update a single family tree which then spreads (pretty much ad infinitum.)
Trying to avoid singing praises too much, as it is just another bit of internet clutter, but it's one that tells me when I'm forgetting birthdays... Fun tool, try mapping your own family...
It is somewhat creepy how all people. living or dead, have facebook-style "About me" and "my interests" however...
Oh, and here's my own corner of the genetic history of humanity:
