So, I managed to actually take a vacation of sorts, and take two days to see the family and meet my newly born nephew on the event of his baptism. This of course meant a 300 mile drive to Little Rock, which was uneventful, but then the eventual drive back. It took 5 hours there. I managed to make the return trip take 11 hours. The extra six were occupied driving through the back roads of Arkansas, randomly detouring to Hot Springs (which is a lovely place that I had to get completely lost to find), stopping at some random lakeside beach and generally taking my sweet ass time. And taking about 300 pictures. It usually takes some outward force acting upon my world to make me relax and step outside of my head. Once upon a time, when I was a starving film student, it would be when the power company decided to kill the juice and I would light candles and read a book in the dark, silent apartment. That was my weird little opportunity to take a vacation. But this was just deciding to take the path less traveled, take my time, and DECIDE to approach the world in a different way. Once I wandered drunk around the French Quarter and reminded people that their evening was not an exception to their lives, not a vacation or a special celebration, but was a n example of life. And my life is usually running from point to point at high speed, and not spending my time wandering the world and discoveing the hidden little treasures it has to offer.
As a post script, I believe that the simple act of regular writing and contemplation of life as I am starting to get in the habit of here is a part of a similar change, even if I'm babbling about nonsense that no one is interested in reading.
